Source coding theory for cascade and branching communication systems

چکیده
A necessary and sufficient condition for a source to satisfythe ergodic theorem and the ShannonMcMillan theoremthe two basicmathematicaltools of the Shannon theory-is that it be asymptoticallymean stationary (AMS). A channel is defined here to be AMS if wheneveran AMS input source is connected to the channel, the resulting input/out.put process is AMS. We develop several characterizations and propertiesof AMS channels that resemble those of AMS sources. As an applicationwe show that these ideas are useful in characterizing composite sources, and in particular that there exist sources that exhibit distinct short termand long term stationarity properties. Thus “locally stationary” or “quasi-stationary” processes such as those used to model speech waveforms mayalso be stationary. In addition, some preliminary results on coding forAMS channels are presented.

by Utsaw Kumar The presence of inexpensive and powerful sensing and communication devices has made it possible to deploy large scale distributed systems for a variety of applications. Interactions among different components of such a system include communication of information and controlling dynamical processes, among others. Thus, it is important to blend ideas from information theory and con...
متن کاملPolar Codes for Coordination in Cascade Networks
We consider coordination in cascade networks and construct sequences of polar codes that achieve any point in a special region of the empirical coordination capacity region. Our design combines elements of source coding to generate actions with the desired type with elements of channel coding to minimize the communication rate. Moreover, we bound the probability of malfunction of a polar code f...
متن کاملSource coding theory for a triangular communication system
A rate-distortion problem is considered for a triangular communication system (TCS), which has one encoder f and two decoders gx and gy. The encoder f maps correlated source outputs (X”, Y”) to two codewords WX and WY, which are sent to gx and gy, respectively. The decoders gx and gy can communicate with each other via rate-constrained channels as many times as they need, and gx reproduces X-” ...

متن کاملOptimization of cascade hydropower system operation by genetic algorithm to maximize clean energy output
Background: Several reservoir systems have been constructed for hydropower generation around the world. Hydropower offers an economical source of electricity with reduce carbon emissions. Therefore, it is such a clean and renewable source of energy. Reservoirs that generate hydropower are typically operated with the goal of maximizing energy revenue. Yet, reservoir systems are inefficiently ope...
